Idduki, literally meaning “narrow gorge ” is a hill station nestled in the Western Ghats in Kerala. It is the epitome of southern beauty. THE UNSPOILT NATURE Located in the southern part of Kerala, Idukki is a landlocked district spread over an area of 5019 sq. kms. Idukki sheading was built up on January 26, 1972, carving out Devikulam, Udumbanchola and Peerumedu taluks from the past Kottayam sheading and Thodupuzha taluk from the sheading Ernakulam. The title 'Idukki' is supposed to be derived from the Malayalam word `idukku', which means a narrow gorge.
At a height of 750 to 2500 m above sea level, the landscape at Idukki is scarred by the rivers Periyar, Thalayar & Thodupuzhayar. The name Idukki is derived from the word idukku meaning à narrow gorge' in Malayalam. The low green hills at Idukki create way for the snaking rivers to gurgle past it is slopes. A sprawling 1500 sq. m area at Idukki is taken up by Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary which is home to an amazing range of wildlife. The Idukki sheading notably supplies about 66 percent of Kerala's power consumption. The hydroelectric project at the Idukki Dam provides a large contribution. This dam is the world's second and Asia's first Arch Dam. With the aroma of its famous spices and the moist green hills, Idukki is ready to get you drunk with its abundance.
